The teenage years are a time of intense and often opposite emotional states that can change very quickly, while young people are not yet able to process and control them at the same speed. Their moods can be strongly influenced by immediate experiences, which may sometimes be dramatised to an extreme. They do not know how long they will continue to feel what they are feeling, and they cannot always distinguish between genuine and temporary emotions. They are still discovering who they are. Everything that happens to them can feel deeply serious, and its importance is often magnified because this, too, is a way of asserting themselves as individuals with the right to feel what they feel.
Adults need to remain close to their children and respond with sensitivity, delicacy and respect. It is extremely important not to dismiss or underestimate what a child is feeling. Too often, adults struggle to understand and accept that children also have problems – small, invisible, difficult emotional states that may be caused by subjective experiences as well as by very real circumstances in the outside world.
Sometimes it seems as though we expect a problem to be enormous before we are willing to recognise it as real. But refusing to believe an adolescent or to take their experience seriously can be the first step towards creating distance between us. They may then look for another trusted person – someone who will listen without criticism and respond with sympathy and understanding. Adolescence is a period of constant emotional highs and lows.
Raising and educating an adolescent is not an easy task, because adults find themselves facing an entire planet that is changing rapidly and constantly, both physically and emotionally. A planet that does not fully understand what is happening to it, has no idea where gravity is pulling it, and for that reason is not always able to control its own reactions.
A teenager cannot control the changes taking place in their physical body – at least these changes are visible and easier to notice. It is even more difficult to manage the emotional changes and waves whose whirlwind they find themselves caught in, without always understanding where they come from, why they affect them so strongly, or where they are leading them. Adolescence is a period of rapid discoveries about oneself, and some of those discoveries can be deeply confusing.
A book about teenagers – A Conversation on Pedagogical and Spiritual Influence on Adolescents
Anyone who has spent time around adolescents knows how cheerful and entertaining they can be, and at the same time how quickly they can bring us to tears of helplessness when they refuse to do what we expect of them. Why does this happen, and what can we, as adults, do to continue having a positive influence on them, to grow alongside them and not lose our connection?
In the book, we look at some of the processes, tendencies and characteristics of development that can help us understand teenagers better. The more we understand what they are going through physically and emotionally, the easier it becomes to find appropriate and respectful ways of communicating with and influencing them.
If you are the parent of one or two teenagers and sometimes feel like running far, far away from them, somewhere deep into the woods, spare a thought for secondary school teachers. Every day, they absorb the energy of thirty teenagers in one room, and that alone requires an admirable degree of emotional resilience.
Realising that our children do not belong to us, but are entrusted to us for a period of time so that we can care for them, helps us understand the enormous responsibility we carry. We, as adults, can inspire them to fly, but we can also make them feel as though their wings have been broken.
Too much control and the desire for everything to happen exactly as we want it to – right here and right now – can very quickly damage our relationship with them. That is why it is important to understand the particular characteristics of this stage of life and to recognise that many of the processes they are going through are a natural part of their development, not a deliberate attempt to annoy us or make our lives more difficult.
What will you not find in this book?
You will not find universal recipes, buttons or techniques that can instantly “fix” a teenager’s mood, behaviour or thoughts. Parenting and education are complex two-way processes between individuals and require time, involvement, understanding and effort from both sides. We can switch on the cooker or the vacuum cleaner by pressing a button – but we cannot change a human being that way.
When we only consume, we accept the world as someone else has created it for us. When we think, create and ask questions, we begin to take part in shaping it ourselves and to develop a voice of our own.
That is why it is important to encourage children not only to use ready-made products, ideas and entertainment, but also to create for themselves – to write, draw, build, invent, solve problems, ask questions and search for new solutions. In this way, they learn to become active participants in the world rather than passive consumers.
When a child discovers the joy of creating, they begin to understand that they have the ability to leave a mark, influence the world around them and contribute their own ideas. This helps develop independence, confidence, critical thinking and a sense of personal responsibility.
Hospitality is an interesting phenomenon that gives us a wonderful opportunity to share the riches of our soul and show its generosity. We all possess countless treasures – love, smiles, attention and a kind word – and sometimes there is no better nourishment for a guest than these.
True hospitality is not measured only by a beautifully set table, a welcoming home or an abundance of food. It is felt in the way we receive the person in front of us – whether we make them feel accepted, wanted, comfortable and valued.
When we teach children to be hospitable, we are teaching them something much greater as well – to make room within themselves for another person, to share, to show attention and to give from what costs nothing but often has the greatest value. In this way, hospitality becomes a language of kindness and humanity.
People are not born environmental activists – environmental awareness and action are learned, and they can be among the first steps towards becoming active and responsible citizens. Our attitude towards nature and the places in which we live begins to develop in childhood through small everyday actions.
Children need to see that there is nothing embarrassing about picking up litter, keeping places clean, or caring for plants, animals and the environment around them. On the contrary, these are expressions of responsibility and respect for the community and for the world we share.
Here, too, the example set by adults is crucial. If we show indifference towards our surroundings, we can hardly expect children to behave differently. But when they see us caring, protecting and taking action, they gradually learn that every person can make a difference and that civic responsibility often begins with the smallest things.
It is not enough to develop only the mind in order to gain knowledge, achieve success and find a good place in society. We also need to develop the heart, because a truly whole person is shaped through the balance between reason and humanity.
The heart, too, needs to be filled with riches – generosity of spirit, modesty, humility, selflessness, humanism, empathy and inner harmony. Intelligence alone is not enough if it is not accompanied by the ability to understand others, show compassion and use our knowledge and abilities in a humane way.
That is why, in parenting and education, it is important to nurture both the mind and the heart. We should teach children not only how to become successful, but also how to become good human beings – because the most valuable kind of success is one that is not achieved at the expense of our humanity.
Gratitude is the warmth that connects us with others and reminds us that kindness should never be taken for granted. It teaches us to notice the effort, care, time and attention that other people give us.
It is important for gratitude to be a two-way process – not only should children learn to thank adults, but adults should also show appreciation towards children. When we thank them for their help, effort, kindness or simply for trying, we show them that their presence and contribution matter.
In this way, through our own example, we build reciprocity, respect and a culture of appreciation. A child who grows up in an environment where gratitude is expressed naturally and sincerely is more likely to learn to notice and value the good in others.
