// Chestita Baba Marta!

Chestita Baba Marta!

There is one very lovely and typical spring Bulgarian tradition, called Baba Marta/Grandma Marta. It is a very ancient tradition to welcome the spring. On 1 March, every Bulgarian wears Martenitsa – a white and red yarn, which symbolise good health and luck. The white is a symbol of strength, purity and happiness. The red is associated with health and fertility. The most typical Martenitsa represents two small woolen dolls - Pizho and Penda. Pizho is the male doll, usually in white color. Penda is the female doll, usually in red color and recognised by her skirt. There are many other types of martenitsa. We wear the martenitsa until we see the first stork; there are many beautiful storks in Bulgaria in the spring.

PRACTISE BULGARIAN WITH SOME QUOTES FROM VASIL LEVSKI (1837 - 1873)

LEARN BULGARIAN THROUGH LITERATURE AND MUSIC!

Vasil Levski (1837 - 1873)

Who is Vasil Levski? It is a very important name for all Bulgarians. For more than 100 years  his name stays clean and is a symbol for freedom. Here are some of his more popular quotes written in Bulgarian.

Quotes

  • If I win - I win for all our people, if I lose - I lose only myself.

SAVE ME. NOW

Nobody knows where the night goes. Nobody knows where the morning comes from. But everyone knows that you and I are here today to send off the night and welcome the morning of our salvation together. Because you hold within yourself a part of my salvation. And your morning depends on me.

You and I are the main opposition here and now. You are a god, a beloved, an enemy, a hangman, a sacrifice, a friend, a neighbour, a martyr, a saint, a mother and a child. You are the catalyst for my transformation.

I am the consciousness of the world. I am the travelling consciousness that changes its forms and faces. A travelling consciousness that reflects the diversity of the energy of space. I am a goddess, a beloved, an enemy, a hangman, a sacrifice, a friend, a neighbour, a martyr, a saint, a mother and a child. I am the free consciousness, unrestricted by dogmas and ideologies.

You are my mirror. You are the one for whom I change. You are the catalyst of my spiritual rise and fall. Without you, I do not know who I am. Without me, you do not know who you are. Without you, I am a lonely, wandering consciousness that has fled from the Source in search of meaning.

LEARN BULGARIAN THROUGH LITERATURE AND MUSIC!

LEARN BULGARIAN THROUGH LITERATURE AND MUSIC!

DATA

Data is a collection of facts, such as numbers, words, measurements, observations or simply descriptions of things. It forms a set of values of qualitative or quantitative variables. We are surrounded by different kinds of data. Individual pieces of data are separate pieces of information. Today, there is so much information available that the real question is whether we should trust it. How much of it is true, and how much is false or misleading? Information about political affairs, the economic state of a country, or predictions that life on planet Earth will soon disappear and that humans alone are responsible for this future. Should we believe the endless flow of words—overly positive when they are political promises and overly negative when they are predictions about the future? Should we believe all these exaggerations? It is a personal choice.

We also produce a great deal of information on a personal level because each of us stands at the centre of our own little universe, reflecting what happens around us. Much of this information exists in the form of rumours and gossip, which can cause a great deal of trouble and anxiety. How can we distinguish gossip from genuine information? We have to rely on our own judgement. One thing, however, is certain: we live in a society obsessed with information, data and all the statistical tools used to collect, present and interpret it. Yet even statistics cannot decide whether information is true or false. Some people even whisper that statistics themselves are responsible for many of these confusions and misunderstandings.

Sorbs/ Lusatians – a Slavic ethnic minority in Lausitz, Germany

SORBIAN LEARNING RESOURCES!

Here is some information about this bilingual Slavic minority in Germany. There are a few video links at the end to watch about their traditions, culture, history and presence.

Sorbs (Upper Sorbian: Serbja, Lower Sorbian: Serby, German: Sorben), known also by their former autonyms Lusatians and Wends, are a West Slavic ethnic group predominantly inhabiting their homeland in Lusatia, a region divided between Germany (the states of Saxony and Brandenburg) and Poland (the provinces of Lower Silesia and Lubusz). According to Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos, Serbs from the Balkan peninsula have the same origins as Lusatians and Kashubians. He also claims that Serbs inhabited the areas between the rivers Elbe and Vistula, on the southern coast of the Baltic sea. They traditionally speak the Sorbian languages (also known as "Wendish" and "Lusatian"), closely related to the Polish, the Kashubian, the Czech and the Slovak. Sorbian is an officially recognized minority language in Germany. The Sorbs are linguistically and genetically closest to the Czechs and Poles. Due to a gradual and increasing assimilation between the 17th and 20th centuries, virtually all Sorbs also spoke German by the late 19th century and much of the recent generations no longer speak the language. The community is divided religiously between Roman Catholicism (the majority) and Lutheranism. The former Prime Minister of Saxony, Stanislaw Tillich, is a Sorb.
The ethnonym "Sorbs" (Serbja, Serby) derives from the medieval ethnic groups called Sorbs (Surbi, Sorabi). The original ethnonym, Srbi, was retained by the Sorbs and Serbs in the Balkans. By the 6th century, Slavs occupied the area west of the Oder formerly inhabited by Germanic peoples. The Sorbs are first mentioned in the 7th century.
In the 19th century the autonym of the Slavic population of Lusatia (the Sorbs) was "Lusatians". The name "Lusatia" was originally applied only to Lower Lusatia, which had been inhabited by Slavs known as Luzici, who may be regarded ancestors of the Lower Sorbs, while Upper Lusatia was inhabited by Slavs known as Milceni, the supposed ancestors of Upper Sorbs.
According to a genetic study published in May 2011, Sorbs show the greatest genetic similarity to Poles, followed by Czechs, consistent with their West Slavic language. They show subtle evidence of genetic isolation but less than Sardinians and French Basques.

Je me sentirais perdu
J'aurais besoin de toi

Et si tu n'existais pas
Dis-moi comment j'existerais
Je pourrais faire semblant d'être moi
Mais je ne serais pas vrai
Et si tu n'existais pas
Je crois que je l'aurais trouvé
Le secret de la vie, le pourquoi
Simplement pour te créer
Et pour te regarder
