Excerpt from the book:

Perhaps one of the greatest, purest, most moving and shortest love stories in world literature is that of Romeo and Juliet in William Shakespeare’s play of the same name. It is a typical adolescent infatuation, and today, from the perspective of everything we know about human emotions and feelings in the twenty-first century, we may debate just how deep Romeo and Juliet’s feelings really were. We may even refuse to recognise what they felt as true love. But what is true love anyway?

Everything in their story happens quickly – intense emotions, quickly made decisions, a hurried secret marriage, the rapid consummation of that marriage, and a sudden death resulting from a tragic misunderstanding. The play is sometimes viewed as a story of the horrors that parents of adolescents might experience. In just a few days, Romeo and Juliet live through with extraordinary intensity experiences that may take other people years.

They are far too young, naïve and impatient to taste the forbidden fruit, driven by physical desire. They are absolutists – they love intensely and hate intensely; there is no middle ground, and everything has to be experienced immediately, here and now. A hurricane of emotions and hormones is raging inside them, and they neither fully understand these feelings nor know how to control them.

One of the most embarrassing and uncomfortable subjects for parents and adolescents to discuss during this period is undoubtedly the awakening of the body and attraction to another person. Many parents often feel even more uncomfortable than their children and never quite bring themselves to talk about the issues connected with emerging sexuality and the physical attraction that adolescents begin to experience.

If adults do not talk to them about these subjects and explain what these new sensations in the body mean, young people may simply follow their physical impulses. They have no way of knowing yet that many more experiences of falling in love and separating may lie ahead, along with many more kisses and embraces.

They need to know that, in practice, they do not have to do anything simply because their body responds with excitement when someone they like appears. Not every feeling has to be acted upon, and not every relationship has to be based on physical intimacy. These bodily stirrings are a sign that they are developing, that their bodies are responding naturally, and that nature is gradually preparing them for the possibility of becoming parents one day. In the natural world, one of the fundamental functions of physical attraction is, after all, the continuation of the species.

Adults should also teach young people what platonic love is and how they can learn to channel the powerful sexual energy they sometimes experience into creative energy. A relationship between a man and a woman based solely on physical attraction may be short-lived and limited, because the material and physical aspects of life are, by their nature, limited in what they can offer. A relationship based on spiritual, intellectual and emotional connection, respect and admiration has the potential to endure for much longer because it can continue to develop – and as the relationship develops, so do the people in love, growing as individuals along the way.
